China Telecom has completed what it describes as the industry’s first 5G-Advanced eRedCap end-to-network interoperability validation, carried out with ecosystem partners and reported in April 2026. The test is a milestone in adapting lightweight 5G to Mobile AI use cases.
Three Areas Validated
- Basic functions — eRedCap UE camping and access control, UE identification, random access, higher-order modulation and BWP configuration, all meeting expectations.
- Network performance — versus 4G Cat-1/1bis low-cost modules, eRedCap delivers higher peak rates and lower latency, with tested uplink/downlink peaks around 10 Mbps, enough for 2K/4K AI camera and smart-toy backhaul.
- Mobile AI adaptation — stable connections validated against the throughput and latency needs of AI terminals.
A 3GPP Release 18 Capability
eRedCap (enhanced RedCap) is a core Release 18 feature. Building on RedCap, it further trims power and cost while targeting smart wearables, low-cost AI devices, industrial sensors and smart-energy meters. China Telecom says it will keep driving 5G-A eRedCap toward commercial launch, laying the communication foundation for the Mobile AI era.
